This Louis XV-style fireplace stands out in particular for the marble used. Arabescato marble, as used on this fireplace, is a white marble veined with gray and black. Here, the diagonal lines of this marble provide a singular character to the fireplace. Arabescato marble is one of the white Carrara marbles, quarried mainly at Seravezza Lucca, in the Carrara basin of Italy.
The black and gray lines are particularly visible on the band of this fireplace. The band is curved, with a thicker center than the ends. It is filled with moldings that follow its contours, and in the center is carved in relief an asymmetrical composition of circular acanthus leaves, some curved or scrolled. From this central figure, curved scrolls run around the fireplace to the leg.
The legs are curved, with a hollowed section on the console part of the leg. At the top of the leg’s console part is a scroll under which a palmette is carved. The rest of the jambs are adorned with moldings and the sides with scrolls.
This fireplace comes with its original brass interior. The interior is adorned with foliage and scrolls that sometimes take the random shape of a water jet. On the bottom of the sides of the interior, we can see scrolls of shells and curves echoing the shape of waves and water jets. The representation of a watery discourse is characteristic of the Rococo style, a style often used under Louis XV.
This mantel is sold with its original brass interior and its broken fireback, which will be restored by us.
