This Neo-Renaissance style fireback was made during the 20th century. It is decorated in its center with the Salamander, which is the King Francis Ist emblem who inherited from his grandfather, Jean d'Angoulème. It symbolizes power over fire, so, by extension, over men. Indeed, according to a tradition since classical antiquity, the salamander can live in the fire and extinguish it, hence its presence on this fireback .
