This pair of armchairs was made of moulded and finely sculpted walnut, ligthened up with gold, in the last decades of the 19th century.
Its shape and decoration are inspired by gothic chairs, indeed we can find the straight and high rectangular backrest and sculpted motif reminding the cathedral's ones and especially the frame of the rosaces. The openwork armrests are also adorned with strong projection smiling faces. One of them is depicting a soldier, the other a moustach man and the two others women. The four characters wears headdresses and jewels reminding the end of the Middle Ages's trend. The four feet of which the ones on the front take the shape of a twisted column are connected by a strut. The front of the seat receive a decoration of open work acanthus leaves scrolls. The fabrics of the seats were made of beautiful velvet, it depicts a decoration of stylized dark blue flowers on a gold background.
We can comapre this work to the one of the Italian furniture maker, settled in Paris in the 1890's, Victor Aimine (1860-1922), of whom the production is typical of the Neo-Gothic style and is especially remarkable by the sculpted faces on the furniture.
